A Basement Laundry Designed to Disappear by Du Bois Design

A multi-award-winning designer in New Zealand and overseas, Du Bois approached the project with a clear objective: to create a hardworking, multi-purpose room that could function seamlessly as a laundry, scullery and circulation space between the home and garage.

Because the room is used daily and serves as a key thoroughfare, maintaining visual order was critical. Piles of washing on display were never an option. Instead, Du Bois integrated two Concelo 35L laundry hampers, each fitted with multi-coloured internal sorters, allowing whites and colours to be separated at the source. This simple but highly effective solution keeps laundry contained, organised and out of sight at all times.

Hidden beneath a generous benchtop designed for folding clothes, positioned away from the sink area, the dual hampers support an efficient workflow from sorting to washing to folding, without interrupting movement through the space. The pull out baskets offer ease of access for everyday use, while their concealed integration ensures the room maintains a calm, uncluttered aesthetic.

Surrounded by warm timber-look cabinetry, textured porcelain tiles and perimeter storage, the Concelo hampers become a key functional element within a design that prioritises clarity, circulation and usability. The result is a refined basement laundry that works hard behind the scenes — proof that practical solutions, when carefully considered, can elevate even the most hardworking spaces.
