Hidden function in a high-end Alpine Retreat

Set in the alpine landscape of Dalefield, Queenstown, this pavilion style guest sanctuary was designed as a place for complete retreat. Led by Architectural Designer, Leigh Garner alongside Interior Designer, Denim Draper, Directors of Origin Studio, the project balances modern architectural lines with a warm, grounded material palette.

Dark timber ceilings, deep toned cabinetry in Dulux ‘Terrible Billy’, and subtle brass detailing create a sense of enclosure and calm, while expansive glazing opens the interior to the surrounding mountain views. The result is a space that feels both protective and connected to its environment.

Within this highly open plan layout, every detail needed to integrate seamlessly, particularly in the kitchen, which remains fully visible from the living area. The new Concelo entro waste system by Hideaway Bins was specified to ensure functionality could be completely concealed within the joinery.

Installed behind custom Shaker drawer fronts, the system maintains a clean, furniture like appearance. For the design duo, both performance and discretion were key, highlighting the choice of Concelo entro for its integration onto the Blum MERIVOBOX runner system, delivering smooth movement consistent with the project’s refined material quality. The Clip’n’Clean system was also noted as important, allowing the waste bin to be cleaned thoroughly between guest stays, while the Active Lid provides effective odour and moisture control to maintain a fresh internal environment.

By resolving waste discreetly, the design remains focused on what matters most: material quality, spatial calm, and the surrounding alpine outlook.
